Abstract. As part of the scientific work, we have attempted to present the authors’ vision of the forms of attracting students to research, design and creative activities, under the supervision of mentors. The claim that changes taking place within modern society require updating the content of education, filling it with new methods, forms, pedagogical technologies, is supported by the arguments of scholars investigating this issue. Investing in human capital is one of the priorities of state policy, particularly in the area of education. Students are successfully involved in national projects, grant competitions, conducting large-scale scientific research. However, desk research is not always sufficient to achieve results. The study of scholarly literature allows us to draw the conclusion that student scientific field trips are organized within the framework of educational institutions, public organizations, and professional communities and contribute to the development of professional and extra-professional skills at the various stages of university studies. An important outcome of higher education in contemporary Russia, in addition to the acquisition of universal, generic professional, and specialized skills among students, is the purposeful and creative socialization process, the inculcation of traditional spiritual and ethical values and civic self-identification, the cultivation of creative potential, and personal fulfillment through specially designed educational activities. In the research, the expedition is regarded as a form of student research activity, during which professional skills are actively developed. Using the example of a scientific expedition, the organizational and pedagogical working conditions for the expedition team, the content and methods their work are revealed. Also, the criteria for developing professional competencies under these conditions are determined. Finally, the results of achieving the goal are formulate. A scientific expedition is a format that allows students to carry out research in the fields of socio-cultural service and tourism, identifying issues and proposing solutions. The organization and conducting of scientific expeditions, naturally, stimulate the scientific interests of young researchers and allow them to demonstrate their research skills. A scientific expedition can be a definite impetus to achieving results in scientific activities and contribute to the development of professional skills.
