Abstract. The article examines the phenomenon of film pedagogy as a trend in the discipline of pedagogy, which now plays a significant role in formation of students’ personal and professional values. Film pedagogy is presented as a tool for both realization of students’ moral development and improvement language skills. The definition of the term “film pedagogy” and its role in English-language classes are given. The image of the teacher and its cinematographic representation are specified in the article. The role of reflection in analyzing films has been formulated. The list of criteria for selecting a film for an educational lesson has been prepared, emphasizing the necessity of authenticity of video materials. The authors came to the conclusion that meaningful watching through reflection is the cornerstone in the process of actualization of moral development in the educational process based on films about teachers’ professional path. In addition, the article offers methodological recommendations for classes relying on extracts of the film “Writers of Freedom” (2007, drama, Germany, USA) about a young teacher Erin Gruwell, who came to a new school and faced pedagogical and personal difficulties. The highlighted methodological recommendations coincide with the logic of the process of implementing meaningful watching.

Keywords: film pedagogy in higher education, authentic film, the image of a teacher, meaningful watching, reflection.
