Abstract. The present article touches upon the problem of the “image of a teacher” in the modern Russian educational environment. The need to determine this concept in relation to the current state agenda is noted. The author cites authentic films about teachers as a tool that contributes to a deep analysis of the “image of the teacher”, for the formation of their own one, of bachelor students of pedagogical direction, English teachers-to-be. In this regard, the article also provides criteria for the selection of a film corresponding to the given goal. One of the most important criteria is authenticity, which is viewed in two ways: 1) as a characteristic of a movie that is shown to students in its original form, in a foreign language, without pre-processing it for educational purposes; 2) as a characteristic of the educational process itself, within which the selected movie is viewed. This means that the situations presented in the chosen movie are realistically, plausibly conveyed to the viewer. The author describes how the process of decoding of a movie by recipients by means of interpreting its verbal and nonverbal content. The role of the teacher is to promote the “meaning formation” process when watching a movie. The author’s attempt to systematize the decoding process through the “text”- “context”-“meaning” paradigm is demonstrated. Viewers are able to identify three main types of discourse in the decoding process: 1) movie itself, 2) personal, 3) professional. In the article, this process was called “meaningful viewing”. Thus, as a result of “meaningful viewing”, students are able to determine their own personal and professional values. These values will form the “image of a teacher” for future pedagogical specialists.

Keywords: authentic movie, the image of a teacher, meaningful viewing, decoding, meaning formation, values.
