Abstract. This article examines the features of the academic excellence of universities in modern realities. Note that in the presence of a wide range of universities, a high-quality and competitive one should be one that fulfills a number of conditions for compliance with a high level in the context of our time. In addition, the Ministry of Higher Education sets the task of bringing Russian universities to the international level, which should also be supported by a number of characteristics, namely, the quality of education, an appropriate material base, effective academic mobility, and highly qualified personnel. The subject of this research is the universities that claim to be the best in modern educational realities. The object of the work is the possible and assumed criteria according to which the university can enter the all-Russian championship in terms of indicators and adequately represent itself and Russian education abroad. The actuality of the article lies in the fact that it is important not only to determine the criteria of academic excellence, in other words, to improve the quality of higher education in the modern university segment, but also to identify ways to achieve this goal in the context of a particular university, to show the features of the implementation of the tasks at the present stage. … The authors pay special attention to the urgent need for a competent personnel policy, which is not always taken into account in modern educational institutions. In addition, applicants and potential students must also meet university standards, have a high-quality competence base, motivation, and education. Improving the qualifications of the teaching staff and students, introducing high-quality selection and incentive measures for those employees and students who show high results and ratings, entering the international level through academic mobility, improving the research base – laboratories, research centers within the university – all this will allow bring the university to a decent educational level and change the situation in the educational space as a whole.
