Abstract. The article reveals the process of researching the professional competencies of future engineers of communications, telecommunications and energy of Surgut State University in the areas of training (specialty): “Infocommunication technologies and communication systems” (ITSS) orientation (profile) “Corporate infocommunication systems and networks” and “Electric Power and electrical engineering” (EE) orientation (profile) “Electric power systems and Networks” of the Department of Radioelectronics and Electric Power Engineering (REEE). The purpose of the ascertaining stage is to check the initial level of formation of professional competencies of future engineers of the northern university. The relevance of the study is due to an increase in the level of formation of professional competencies in each course when studying disciplines of various kinds (general professional, professional cycle, as well as a cycle of practices) and the adjustment of the learning process in the areas of training. In describing the results, the author used the methods of theoretical and empirical research; Such components of the formation of professional competencies (PC) as value, cognitive and activity levels – low, medium and high – are also highlighted. Results: based on the study of the components of the study, professional preferences were compiled, and the levels of PC formation of future engineers were revealed. The obtained results will be used in further work on the dissertation on the research topic. Conclusion: based on the results of the work done, it can be concluded that the level of PC formation of future engineers is defined as average – this indicates that students in the first year of study do not have enough theoretical and practical training in basic educational programs. The proposed research topic further requires an analysis of the formation of the PC of future engineers in subsequent courses and research stages. On this basis, it is planned to create a model for their formation. This article may be useful for teachers of secondary and higher educational institutions, special technical institutions in the field of communications, telecommunications and electric power industry.
