Abstract. The article presents some results of a monitoring study of the reading circle of modern Russian students. As a result of the analysis of the opinions of students at universities in Moscow and Astrakhan, a significant genre diversity in the structure of readers’ preferences for works of fiction was revealed. It was recorded that works of classical literature occupied the first place in the structure of genre preferences of the surveyed students in 2019, and in 2022 detectives came out on top due to a drop in interest in classics among respondents in Astrakhan. It is shown that according to the totality of the choices, students prefer “light” genres designed for the mass reader – detective stories, fantasy, adventure romance, psychological and romance novels. Action films and thrillers are being pushed out of books into other media sources – movies, TV series, video games. It is noted that science fiction, drama, comedy, historical novels, plays, memoirs, poetry, epic novels, folklore, myths are least in demand among respondents. The authors come to the conclusion that reading works of fiction remains a significant occupation for young people in Russia, but from the sphere of intellectual work, which forms creative perception and imaginative thinking, it turns into a way of escapism, leisure pastime.

Keywords: reader preferences, genres of fiction, genre diversity, students.
