Abstract. The article deals with topical problems of spiritual and moral education of convicts, aimed at increasing their sense of justice. The paper provides a theoretical and legal analysis of the provisions of the category of legal consciousness of convicts, since in the conditions of isolation of a person from society, a trend is gradually emerging associated with the deformation of his legal consciousness. In addition, a description is given of the main directions of development of the spiritual and moral education of convicts in places of deprivation of liberty, which contribute to the formation of personal moral convictions, the desire to change their lifestyle, the formation of a careful and caring attitude to the world around them, and an increase in their legal awareness. The author comes to the conclusion that the activities of the employees of the regional departments of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, responsible for organizing work with convicts, should be of a comprehensive programmatic nature and orient all employees towards a moral attitude towards citizens who find themselves in places of deprivation of liberty. The program of activities of employees should be aimed at: overcoming in convicts impermissible in civil society spiritual and moral positions and beliefs, negative personal qualities; on the formation of legal self-awareness and moral and aesthetic qualities of the individual; on the formation of the identity of the convict – a full-fledged citizen of society, reflect the regional aspect of the functioning of the territorial body of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, and can be timed to coincide with some significant event in the country. As one of the most important areas in improving the penitentiary activities of the penitentiary system, the spiritual and moral education of convicts contributes to the formation of legal awareness, the expansion of worldview, the improvement of the general culture, the development of readiness for self-realization and self-improvement, involvement in the processes of self-education of the convict for successful adaptation in new conditions after release.
