Abstract. The article reveals the problem of forming sustainable motivation among students engaged in independent work within the framework of studying the English language. In particular, it explains the role of students’ independent work as an integral component of the educational process and raises the issue of motivation deficit. A brief analysis of the characteristics of students’ motivation during their autonomous work is provided. Based on the author’s professional experience and a review of colleagues’ experiences in research, fundamentally important and topical approaches to creating conditions for maximum student engagement in educational activities both during classroom sessions and beyond are presented and summarised. Specific methods for creating a favorable working atmosphere in English classes are described, aimed at extrapolating students’ positive mindset to out-of-class independent work as well. The potential and advantages of using AI-technologies and gamification for educational purposes are separately considered. There main benefit is complete student involvement in the learning process and, consequently, maximum efficiency in developing language competencies. The material presented in the article allows drawing the conclusion that modern teachers have sufficient tools at their disposal to foster sustainable interest and conscientiousness among students and to predict its further deeper integration into the teaching process. At the same time, all the methods mentioned in the article can also be used in teaching other humanities disciplines that involve developing conversational skills, teamwork abilities, and quality autonomous work.
