Abstract. When training graphic designers for future professional skills, developing students’ artistic, figurative, and graphic thinking is crucial. This is crucial because graphic design largely involves working on a flat surface, in two-dimensional space. Therefore, students must be able to use simple graphic tools to create the illusion of space, volume, and materiality on a flat surface, and to connect these elements compositionally, skillfully distributing tonal and color relationships. The first step toward this is mastery of drawing and the expressive means of decorative graphics, as the compositional and stylistic techniques of decorative graphics are stylistically close to the search for laconic and expressive form in graphic design. Such graphics develop students’ graphic perception and thinking. The primary expressive means in graphics are the dot, line, spot, and stroke, which allow for the creation of expressive graphic objects actively used in graphic design. Therefore, this article examines a methodological sequence for mastering these graphic expressive means, working with materials such as ink, pen, and brush. The article presents graphic material—a sequence for mastering the aforementioned graphic materials, from simple to complex, with explanations of the purpose and significance of each stage of mastering the material. Thus, in this article, the authors demonstrate how to consistently and methodically master complex graphic techniques necessary for developing artistic, figurative, compositional, and graphic thinking at the initial stages of learning.

Keywords: graphic design, artistic and figurative and graphic thinking, drawing, composition, project graphics, special drawing, decorative graphics, ink, pen graphics, brush, stroke, silhouette, decorative still life.
