Abstract. This article examines the current problem of the economic and geographical study of cities, which are defined by the authors as complex socio-economic entities that play a key role in the geographical division of labor and district formation. The main focus is on inner–city microdistricting, the process of allocating parts of a city that perform specific functions in industrial and non-industrial areas. The authors substantiate the need for a large-scale study of the city not only as a “product” of the development of an economic area, but also as an active center of district formation, where each microdistrict, being the lowest link of the territorial production complex, contributes to the functioning of the whole. The article presents a methodology for studying cities, including an analysis of their role in district formation, functional typology, microgeography, as well as their relationship to urban planning practice. Particular importance is attached to the identification of inner-city territorial production complexes, the core of which are the leading industrial enterprises that form residential areas around themselves and determine the economic structure of the neighborhood. Using the example of the cities of Nizhny Novgorod (Avtozavodsk district) and Ufa (Kalininsky, Ordzhonikidze districts), the mechanism of formation of such complexes is demonstrated by analyzing industrial relations, infrastructure, traffic flows and employment structure of the population. The article emphasizes that the study of microdistricts is not only of theoretical importance for understanding the essence of district formation, but also of great practical importance for district planning and forecasting urban development. In conclusion, conclusions are drawn about the crucial role of parent enterprises in the formation of inner-city neighborhoods and their impact on the specialization of industrial hubs, which is confirmed by statistical data on the cities of the Republic of Bashkortostan.
Keywords: city, microgeography, microdistrict, microdistricting, district formation, territorial production complex.
