Abstract. The article discusses issues related to the classification and analysis of difficulties in studying mathematics at the level of basic general education. The relevance of this research is due to the need to form a high-quality mathematical education for the younger generation in the context of the transition to technological sovereignty of our country, as well as to study the causes of difficulties in mathematical education among schoolchildren and to find ways to improve the effectiveness of mathematics education. The purpose of this work is to clarify the concept of “difficulties in learning mathematics” and its relationship to the concepts of “teaching mathematics,” “risks of academic failure,” “difficulties in learning,” “academic failure,” and others, as well as to develop an author’s approach to the typology of difficulties experienced by students in learning mathematics at the level of basic general education. An analysis of scientific research has shown that when determining the difficulties of studying mathematics, mainly psychological and pedagogical aspects are considered. Among the causes of academic underachievement, there are psychological, physiological, pedagogical, and social factors. The author’s approach is to consider the “difficulties in learning mathematics” in relation to the specific nature of mathematics itself. By considering the concept of “difficulties in learning mathematics” as a subset of the concept of “difficulties in teaching mathematics,” the article focuses on the specific causes of academic difficulties faced by students in the process of learning mathematics. The study involved a questionnaire survey of students and mathematics teachers at secondary schools, and identified the main reasons for difficulties in learning mathematics. In accordance with the requirements of the Federal State Standard for Basic General Education, the authors have proposed an author’s classification of difficulties in learning mathematics, and have specified subject, metasubject, and personal difficulties. In conclusion, the authors have drawn conclusions and discussed the prospects for further research on the issue of organizing the education of students who experience difficulties in learning mathematics.

Keywords: learning, learning difficulties, studying mathematics, difficulties in studying mathematics, subject-specific difficulties, meta-subject-specific difficulties, and personal difficulties.
