Abstract. This article defines the place and importance of developing foreign language professional communicative competence in higher education. The emphasis is on developing oral professional communication skills through the use of communicative tasks at the final stage of a research project. The author emphasizes the integrative nature of the professional communicative competence in foreign languages, which combines personal qualities, general communicative skills and professional competencies. Particular attention is paid to dialogic interaction as a key component of professional communication, characterized by spontaneity, ellipticity and the use of non-verbal means. The paper analyzes various forms of presenting research results, while substantiating the feasibility of using debates as an effective tool for developing communicative skills. The mechanisms for overcoming language, information and cultural barriers by students in the process of professionally oriented communication are considered in detail. It is proved that modeling real professional situations through communicative tasks contributes not only to the development of language skills, but also to the formation of critical thinking, the ability to argue a position and work in a team. The article considers the specifics of a research project, its stages and forms that allow using the professional component in a foreign language course. Using the example of using debates in the format of K. Popper at the stage of presenting the final product of a group research project, the article examines the technology of using communicative tasks in order to implement a professionally oriented component in a practical foreign language course at a non-linguistic university. It is concluded that a research project is an effective technology for developing foreign language professional and communicative competence, and debates provide an opportunity to immerse students in a situation of professional communication as a process of professional interaction. The article is of practical value for foreign language teachers at non-linguistic universities, offering specific methodological solutions for integrating the professional component into the process of teaching a foreign language.
