Abstract. The article discusses the educational approach of “teaching by service” as a tool for implementing the third mission of the university and forming professional, civic and social competencies in students. This approach allows for establishing horizontal connections between educational institutions, commercial and non-profit organizations, social institutions and the volunteer community. Students in the course of such interaction have the opportunity to implement the acquired knowledge and skills in practice, they are considered as active agents of their own educational and professional trajectory. Special attention is paid to the mentoring system, which provides purposeful support for student teams implementing socially significant projects. Today, mentoring is a universal technology aimed at creating conditions for the formation and development of certain professional and social competencies of students in their academic, professional, and spiritual and moral development in the format of service learning. The need for a two-level mentoring model, which includes an academic mentor from the university and a field mentor from a social partner, has been substantiated. This model provides both methodological support and evaluation of educational outcomes in terms of learning objectives, as well as access to the resources and practices of the social partner organization. This mentoring model allows the university’s educational goals to be aligned with the community’s real needs, while also increasing students’ motivation and engagement, fostering a strong social awareness and readiness for civic participation. The article outlines the roles of each mentor and the conditions for effective collaboration, including the stages of work and communication guidelines. The functions of each mentor are revealed, the conditions of effective interaction are outlined, including the stages of work and the rules of communication. It is shown that the availability of mentoring support contributes to increasing students’ motivation, improving the quality of project solutions, and strengthening the partnership between universities and social partners in the form of non-profit organizations, state and municipal authorities, and public sector institutions. The article’s materials can be used in the development of project-based learning programs aimed at solving social problems.
