Abstract. The modern concept of higher professional education closely links the course and results of training with the level of organization of independent work of students, since the system of higher education is designed not only to provide a certain system of knowledge, but also to form professional qualities of future specialists. Currently, the concept of independent cognitive activity of students is a relevant area of research in the methodology of teaching foreign languages. Independent cognitive activity of students gained popularity after the spread of the communicative method in teaching a foreign language. The purpose of the article is to analyze the concept of independent cognitive activity at a university and highlight the features and forms of its organization in the process of studying foreign languages. The work uses such research methods as analysis of scientific and methodological works on the research problem, interpretation of the research results. The article discusses definitions of independent cognitive activity based on scientific and methodological literature. A number of issues related to the organization of independent cognitive activity of students in the process of studying a foreign language are presented. Various forms of independent cognitive activity of students in the process of studying a foreign language are considered (free activity, work according to plans based on tasks, project activities). The essential importance of strategies of independent cognitive activity (cognitive, metacognitive, affective, social) that facilitate foreign language learning is emphasized. The results of the study can be used in the process of teaching foreign languages in higher education institutions. The scientific novelty of the study is that the work reveals the features of various forms and strategies of independent cognitive activity of students.
