Abstract. Academic counseling is designed to help students build a trajectory of their professional development, as well as resolve academic problems that arise during the learning process, that is, it is aimed at obtaining the maximum result from studying at a university, which is especially important in today’s conditions characterized by high competition in the labor market. The purpose of this article is to present the main provisions of academic counseling and identify the possibilities and limitations of their implementation in Russian universities. The problem of the research is to determine how academic counseling helps students plan and organize their academic and extracurricular activities to maximize the implementation of their individual potential, university resources and connections in the academic and professional communities, thereby increasing their chances of achieving educational, professional, personal and social goals. It can be said that academic counseling integrates all spheres of a student’s life and helps him rationally and optimally choose the appropriate means to achieve meaningfully formulated life goals and established priorities. The research method was the analysis of scientific research in the field of pedagogy of higher education and professional counseling. The article analyzes the reasons for the relevance of academic counseling in Russian higher education, examines in detail the concept of academic counseling, as well as the main models of organizing academic counseling. The main differences between academic and career counseling are shown. Special attention is paid to the main target groups of academic counseling: first- and last-year undergraduate students, second-year master’s students, and postgraduate students.
