Abstract. In Russia, there is an active transformation of traditional education into an innovative education system. In this regard, a number of problems arise that are associated with the quality of higher education. Every year more and more people strive to get higher education, which has led to the formation of a stereotype of a modern person who has a higher education. The priority given to quantity has always reduced the quality of the product produced. This is the case with our higher education. Our universities in a market economy are interested in increasing the number of students in order to thereby consolidate their position in the educational services market. The massive spread of higher education reduces its exclusivity and value. On the other hand, this phenomenon will generate unemployment, since the Russian economy does not need such a large number of specialists with higher education, they will simply be superfluous. In this article, the author tried to identify the main problems of Russian education and suggest some possible directions for their solution in modern conditions. The role of the state and society in solving problems related to education is considered. This work reveals the basic principles and methods of Russian education. The conclusion is made about the quality of education in the Russian Federation and about the tendency of its development, which consists in the modernization of education in general and higher education in particular. The modernization of the country is based mainly on the innovative processes of education, on its substantive and structural renewal, which act as a growth point and at the same time priority areas for the formation of civil society, the development and strengthening of medicine, economy, science and other vital spheres.
