Abstract. The article is devoted to the development of a structural and functional model for organizing professional and educational mentoring at a university in the sports industry. The relevance of the study is determined by the need to institutionalize mentoring as a systemic element of educational work in accordance with the Concept for the Development of Mentoring in the Russian Federation for the Period up to 2030. Based on the analysis of domestic experience and the regulatory framework, a three-level model is proposed, including vertical mentoring “teacher-curator – student”, horizontal mentoring “peer to peer” and external mentoring “employer – student”. The choice of a structural and functional approach to modeling the mentoring process is due to the fact that this approach allows us to identify the professional positions (functions) of a mentor in different types of professional, educational and sports activities. Thus, the authors identified three functions: mentor-methodologist, mentor-educator and professional mentor in sports, each of which is described in the coordinates: “subject”, “activity structure”, “functions”. The specifics of the sports industry are examined from the perspective of mentoring’s polyvalence (the mentor exemplifies all aspects of activity, including physiological), early mentoring specialization, and the emotional and volitional intensity of mentoring, as well as the integration of the influence of multiple mentors on the mentee. The presented positions of the structural-functional approach are reflected in a model of professional and educational mentoring at a university specializing in sports. The article describes the model’s structural components (target, content, organizational and managerial, and performance) and the functional content of each level. The results of testing the model at a university specializing in sports are presented, confirming its effectiveness in increasing student retention and satisfaction with mentoring.
