Abstract. Article considers the problem of the would-be translator’s sociolinguistic competence formation. In the context of globalization and the expansion of intercultural contacts, the formation of sociolinguistic competence is a key aspect of training highly qualified translators who are able to effectively communicate in a variety of social contexts. The author adheres to the opinion that in the context of the formation of sociolinguistic competence of students who are to become translators and interpreters, the methods of imitation and role modelling show the greatest effectiveness, therefore, the research is aimed at role-play as a method of its formation. The relevance of this study is due to the need to adapt educational methods to the modern requirements of the labour market and increase the competitiveness of graduates of linguistic universities. The research goal is to develop and theoretically substantiate a set of role plays created in order to form the sociolinguistic competence of the would-be translator. To achieve this goal, the following tasks are solved: analysis of the theoretical foundations of the formation of sociolinguistic competence; identification of the role of role-playing in the development of communication skills and socio-cultural awareness; development of methodological recommendations for the use of role plays in the educational process. The following research methods are used: analysis of scientific literature on pedagogy, linguistics, sociolinguistics and translation theory; systematization and generalization of theoretical provisions; modeling of the educational process. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that we have concretized scientific ideas about the potential possibilities of using imitation-role modelling methods. Moreover, for the first time, a set of methods of imitation and role modelling was substantiated and developed, which can be used to form the sociolinguistic competence of the would-be translator. Based on the analysis of theoretical material and generalization of the experience of using interactive teaching methods, conclusions are made about the high effectiveness of role-plays, contributing to the formation of students’ skills of adaptation to various communicative situations, taking into account social norms and cultural characteristics of native speakers.
