UPDATING STUDENTS ‘STUDY OF THE PHENOMENON OF MODALITY IN ENGLISH AND TURKIC LANGUAGES

Abstract. This article aims to provide students with an in-depth study of the functional-semantic category of modality using two languages: English and Tatar. Anglo-American literary works and their existing translations into Tatar serve as practical material. In their study, the authors note the inherent ambiguity of the category of modality, describing it as a special, comprehensive linguistic category that encompasses the entire functional-semantic spectrum of expressing the speaker’s attitude toward the content of an utterance. Through a detailed translation analysis, the authors aim to identify and systematize the most accurate equivalents of the original modal components in the Tatar language. They also outline the main approaches and strategies in selecting linguistic means to ensure the adequate and effective transmission of modal meanings in literary translation. The material for this study is classic Anglo-American literary works that have been translated into Russian and Tatar. The choice of research material was determined by the fact that all existing translations of classical works share a key characteristic—they are mediated by the Russian language—which is of particular importance in the educational process of training philologists and linguists. Therefore, a comprehensive study of the characteristics and identification of patterns of modal relations transfer in this specific triad of languages ​​has not only theoretical but also significant practical significance for the training of qualified translators and the enhancement of their competencies.
