Abstract. The article proves the relevance of the study of the cultural and historical foundations of the development of art education in China, which is related to the preservation and transmission of national cultural values to the younger generation through the means of art; the transformation of education aimed at integrating cultural national values and advanced technologies to ensure the quality of people’s lives. The article presents the goals, objectives, and research methods that allowed the author to identify the cultural and historical foundations of the development of art education in China, systematize and define the specific historical and pedagogical trends in the development of art education in China in the 20th century, as a basis for its transformation in the 21st century. The value foundations of art education that developed in Confucianism (double cultivation of virtue and art, correctness and integrity of moral education of character, etc.) and Taoism (unity of nature, art and man, great ingenuity and modesty, etc.) have been identified and described. The loss of Chinese traditional national values in the 20th century changed the vector of development of art education in China. Based on the results of solving the assigned task, the historical and pedagogical trends in the development of art education in China have been established: the Qing dynasty period determined the status of primary school art education; the Mingko period was marked by the creation of an art education system; during the New China period, art education was systematized and standardized; the transformation period was associated with a change in the goal of art education, which was to promote the comprehensive development of students and improve the quality of life for the entire nation.
