Abstract. The article is devoted to the current topic of artificial intelligence integration into foreign language learning in higher education. In modern pedagogical reality, there is a need to adapt the foreign language acquisition process to the new information environment, the necessity to optimize the foreign language teaching and learning through the targeted implementation of artificial intelligence technologies. At the same time, the didactic potential, as well as the practice of using artificial intelligence in the educational process, the opinion of its participants have not been sufficiently studied yet. The purpose of the study: to identify the opinion of students of Kuban State University on the didactic possibilities of artificial intelligence in studying a foreign language. The main research methods were: theoretical thematic analysis, structural and functional analysis, a survey method in the form of a written questionnaire, qualitative and quantitative content analysis. In the course of the study, the anonymous written survey of 136 students of Kuban State University has been conducted; a comprehensive analysis of the students’ practice of using artificial intelligence technologies in studying a foreign language and their opinions on the didactic capabilities of these technologies has been carried out. The results obtained demonstrate one hundred percent involvement of students in the active use of artificial intelligence in the field of foreign language learning, with their high awareness of its didactic capabilities. The findings identified the most popular artificial intelligence technologies among respondents, as well as the educational tasks for which students use artificial intelligence in the practice of foreign language learning. The study revealed that most students positively assess the didactic potential of artificial intelligence technologies in intensifying language education; at the same time, the respondent’ opinions on the use of artificial intelligence technologies in their foreign language learning practice are ambiguous, since students have concerns related to the shortcomings and risks of their use. The practical significance of the study lies in the possibility of using its results in planning and organizing the process of foreign language teaching and learning, with artificial intelligence technologies integrated in the classroom and independent educational activities of students.
Keywords: artificial intelligence technologies in language education, artificial intelligence in foreign language learning, use of artificial intelligence in foreign languages teaching at university settings, didactic possibilities of artificial intelligence technologies in foreign language learning.
