ADOLESCENT, CONFLICT BEHAVIOR STRATEGIES, AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Abstract. This article presents the results of an empirical study aimed at studying the relationship between the level of emotional intelligence (EI) and preferred behavioral strategies in conflict situations in adolescents. The study involved 80 8th grade students (average age – 14.7 years). The following methods were used to diagnose key variables: the EmIn questionnaire by D.V. Lyusin (2006), the emotional intelligence test by N. Hall, as well as the Thomas-Killman technique adapted by N.V. Grishina (2008), which makes it possible to assess the propensity for the five main strategies of behavior in conflict (competition, cooperation, compromise, avoidance, adaptation). The correlation analysis (Spearman coefficient) revealed statistically significant relationships (p <0.01) between the level of emotional intelligence and the choice of conflict resolution strategies. It was found that adolescents with high EI scores are more likely to use constructive strategies such as cooperation (r = 0.42) and compromise (r = 0.38), which indicates the ability to empathize, consciously manage emotions and search for mutually beneficial solutions. On the contrary, a low level of EI correlates with the predominance of destructive behavioral patterns – rivalry (r = -0.36) and avoidance (r = -0.31), which may indicate a lack of emotional regulation skills and a tendency to impulsive reactions. The results obtained confirm the hypothesis of a significant influence of emotional intelligence on the choice of conflict behavior strategies. The revealed patterns emphasize the importance of the development of EI in adolescence as a key factor in the formation of psychologically mature ways of interacting in controversial situations. The practical significance of the research lies in the possibility of using its findings in the development of psychological and pedagogical programs aimed at developing emotional competence, communication skills and constructive conflict management in adolescents.
