Abstract. The article examines the issues of patriotic education of the younger generation, covering historical, cultural and social aspects, defines the role and place of patriotic education in the formation of the personality of a Russian citizen. The authors substantiate the importance of the problem under consideration for the family, social institutions and society as a whole, which requires an integrated approach to its solution. The education system is positioned as a key factor not only in intellectual development, but also in the spiritual and moral development of young people, based on an understanding of the cultural and historical experience and traditions of the people. Local history training is one of the essential systemic qualities of secondary school students. The genesis of school local history shows that the importance of such training is determined by the need to study the regions of the state. Awareness of belonging to a certain region, to a certain regional culture has never disappeared, and it has been developing especially in recent decades. Modern teachers are increasingly turning to local material in the process of teaching and educating students, to form patriotic feelings for the local region and its culture, and at the same time to be able to see their region in relation to the whole world. The main goal of the local history education of modern schoolchildren is to prepare them for life in their region, region, the formation of such local history traits as a focus on studying the region, a positive, caring attitude to the problems of their small homeland. Such an organization of educational activities with schoolchildren allows them to form the personal traits of a patriot, citizen, and local historian.
