Abstract. The processes of education in organizations for orphaned children are hierarchical and regulated by the rules of the daily routine. The regulation of orphanages restricts the freedom of choice, including the sections of additional education. If a child in a family can afford to choose an additional education section and can come home at different times, then an orphan child can express his desire to attend certain sections, but cannot return to the organization for orphans later than the time of lights out, as this would be a violation of the discipline of the institution. Limited choice and regulation orphanages lead to problems of socialization and adaptation of persons from among orphans and children left without parental care – graduates of organizations for orphans. In order to form a social activity that includes many components, it is possible to develop the personal potential of orphaned children through volunteer activities through the creation of project ideas and the implementation of social projects. Social design is currently a form of social activity and is supported by various social institutions. Thanks to social design, students of orphaned children’s organizations have the opportunity to learn about real problems of school or adult life, look at them from a different perspective and offer their ideas on possible solutions. Social design may not be a section of additional education and may not be included in the plan of educational work of an orphan institution, but it can be implemented by social volunteers – caring people who work with orphans on the basis of an interdepartmental agreement and thus develop personal potential among orphans by finding solutions to social problems of society through social design. The article summarizes the experience of developing the personal potential of pupils of the Family Education Assistance Center No. 15. St. Petersburg through the involvement of pupils in project activities by volunteers of the orphanage.

Keywords: upbringing, volunteer activity, orphaned children, social orphanhood, social design, personal potential.
