Abstract. The evolution of higher education in Russia, understood in the context of changes in its potential and structure, has led, among other things, to the popularization of higher education. There has also been the development of new fields of study and specializations and the increasing importance of a university degree in the labor market as a response to the needs of a developing economy. The current state of higher education has identified the need for professionalization of university management. Professionalization (improvement) of higher education management in the author’s understanding is a set of measures aimed at increasing the effectiveness of university activities through continuous development, involving comprehensive and professional anticipation of opportunities and threats, planning future activities and methods of achieving goals, as well as control and modification of implemented processes. In addition, the article aims to outline the problems associated with university management and, as a consequence, gaining a competitive advantage. The presented problem requires analyzing the literature on the current state and prospects of development of Russian universities. Also presented are the results of a field study conducted by the survey method using the Internet. The method of analyzing data from primary and secondary sources with subsequent conclusions based on the collected material was used in the preparation of the article.

Keywords: professional management, professionalization of university management, universities, university organizational systems.
