Abstract. Now, single-industry cities operate throughout the territory of the Russian Federation. Their maintenance and development are one of the most important tasks of economic policy, not only of the subject in which they are located, but also for the state as a whole. The article discusses the main definitions of monocities: “monofunctional” and “mono-profile” cities. The factors of the emergence of single-industry towns and the features of their development are described. The article deals with the dependence of the location of single-industry towns in the Russian Federation on the resource potential of the territory: natural and socio-economic. The peculiarity of single-industry towns as suppliers of highly qualified personnel of a narrow focus, working at city-forming enterprises, is noted. The authors have traced the negative features and risks, characteristic of Russian monocities with the most difficult socio-economic situation. The reasons for the creation of economic zones with special conditions for the location of enterprises are highlighted. The concept of “territory of advanced socio-economic development” is disclosed. The number of territories of advanced socio-economic development and residents located on their territories in the Russian Federation and in the Republic of Bashkortostan has been determined. The dynamics of development of territories of advanced socio-economic development in monotowns of the Republic of Bashkortostan, from their date to the present, has been studied. The specializations of the city-forming enterprises of each mono-city under study are highlighted. A cartographic material with an indication of the registered residents of the territories of advanced socio-economic development of each mono-city under study is presented. The directions of activity and specialization of residents in each mono-city under study are indicated. Brief conclusions are made about changes in the general socio-economic situation of a single-industry town during the creation of a territory of advanced socio-economic development by 2021. Based on the results of the study, the remaining main problems of the territories of advanced socio-economic development of the mono-cities of the Republic of Bashkortostan under study were identified and some proposals were noted to improve the quality of service in these territories.
