Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of the educational approach “service learning” in the context of the educational function of a modern university and the transformation of its social mission. In the context of the complication of social tasks and the strengthening of the interaction of higher education with society, the importance of educational practices aimed at combining academic training and socially significant activities of students is increasing. The work considers the historical and pedagogical prerequisites for the formation of the “service training” approach, dating back to the traditions of practice-oriented education and the combination of training with socially useful work. Based on the analysis of value orientations and expectations of young people, the guidelines of the educational approach “service training” in the logic of vocational education are determined. This approach sets itself as the main goal the achievement of educational results through the implementation by students of socially oriented projects and the use of specialized projects in them to direct the preparation of knowledge and skills acquired by a student during the development of an educational program. It is shown that the ideas of including students in activities of social significance consistently developed in pedagogical thought of different eras and were further developed in modern educational models. Particular attention is paid to the educational potential of this approach in the higher education system. It is justified that the participation of students in social projects and interaction with local communities contributes to the formation of social responsibility, civic engagement, willingness to cooperate and orientation for the public good. Modern practices of introducing “service learning” in Russian university education and their significance for the implementation of the educational function of the university are considered. It is concluded that the integration of the educational process and socially useful activities is an important mechanism for the formation of value guidelines and the development of the personality of students.
