DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING MATERIALS FOR TRANSPORT SPECIALTIES BASED ON LEXICAL ANALYSIS OF TRANSCRIBED VIDEO CONTENT

Abstract. The purpose of this study is to justify and practically implement a methodology for applying automated speech-to-text transcription in the development of English language teaching materials, based on lexical analysis of English nominative units within the context of intelligent railway transport systems. The research is conducted within the framework of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) for students of technical programs at non-language universities. The paper presents an original methodology for processing authentic video content (exemplified by the video “Internet of Things (IoT) in Railway Transport”) using Speech2Text technology, encompassing stages of lexical analysis, terminology classification, and development of interactive exercises on the LearningApps platform. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the integration of speech recognition technologies into language pedagogy, the expansion of theoretical understanding of transcription’s role in developing professional communicative competencies, and the systematization of approaches to selecting and adapting authentic materials for language proficiency levels ranging from A1 to B2 (CEFR). As a result, 20 key nominative units were identified, with their frequency and semantic significance for professional communication in intelligent railway transport determined. A flexible framework for integrating transcribed materials into the educational process was developed, featuring a three-stage exercise system (“term matching”, “crossword”, “text reconstruction”), which was successfully piloted with undergraduate students of technical specialties at the Russian University of Transport (RUT). Methodological recommendations for instructors were created to enable adaptation of materials to varying proficiency levels. The practical significance of the study consists in enhancing the effectiveness of developing professional vocabulary, listening skills, and intercultural communication competencies among future transport engineers, thereby contributing to their competitiveness in the international labor market.
