Abstract. Currently, in addition to teaching self–study skills, the teacher faces another important task – it is the motivation of students to learn a foreign language and perform independent work. Experts in the field of pedagogy and psychology are convinced that the results and quality of an activity depend on the needs of its performer, his motives and the purposefulness of his actions. In turn, the determining factor for them is the aforementioned motivation, which plays the role of a trigger mechanism for any activity: from physical to mental. It is she who forces a person to choose and systematize methods and techniques to achieve their goals. The motivation is fueled by the presence of a real end result. If he is absent, it either does not exist, or it fades away. Consequently, there is a decline in the performance of work or its complete cessation. There is a clear pattern: before learning the language directly, students have high motivation. Language proficiency is determined by the increasing role of international scientific and technical cooperation in the field of geographic information systems. It is important to work with foreign software products, scientific literature and new generation maps. Learning foreign languages also promotes intercultural communication, broadens horizons, and promotes self-discipline and organization. Most of the cartography literature and software is available in foreign languages (English, French, German, and others). Under these conditions, proficiency in a foreign language determines the professional qualities and competencies of a graduate cartographer. The independent work of cartography students in a foreign language has its own peculiarities: working with a map legend requires understanding conventional signs through deciphering the attached text, understanding geographical names requires the ability of semantic translation. Reading additional auxiliary information to the map is possible if you know the language. Thus, proficiency in English and other foreign languages is an important component of modern professional education for specialists in various industries, including in the field of cartography and geoinformatics, as it provides access to science, technology and international standards, promotes innovation and increases competitiveness in the global market.
