Abstract. The article presents the results of an empirical study devoted to the study of the attitude of cadets of educational organizations of the Federal Penal Service (FSIN) of Russia to volunteer work, taking into account the specifics of vocational education. The relevance of the work is determined by the need to improve the educational process of departmental universities and to find effective mechanisms for the formation of professionally significant qualities of future specialists in the penal correction system (JIS). The empirical base consisted of data from a survey of 483 cadets from three educational organizations: the Academy of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia (Ryazan), Perm and Voronezh Institutes of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia. The average age of the respondents is 21.3 years. It is noted that the motivational structure of students’ participation in volunteer activities is complex, combining altruistic (helping those in need, serving society) and pragmatic (acquiring professional skills, personal growth) components. There is a direct correlation between the profile of professional training and the choice of volunteer work: future lawyers are focused on legal and social volunteering, psychologists and probation officers are focused on social and pedagogical volunteering, dog handlers are focused on animal volunteering and mentoring, and future information security specialists are focused on event, patriotic, and digital volunteering. The main barriers are the lack of time due to high academic loads, the lack of a reward system, and the lack of information about projects. Despite the high level of potential readiness among cadets (between 71 and 79 percent), systematic institutionalization of volunteering is required. Measures have been proposed to establish volunteer centers, introduce optional courses, integrate volunteer activities into official duties, and develop partnerships with non-profit organizations.
