Abstract.The dynamism of employment processes in the Moscow metropolitan area actualizes the need for a comprehensive analysis of economic activity and labor motivation of Muscovites in the complex interaction of social, economic, cultural and psychological factors. Research methods: analysis of statistical information and some results of a population survey according to the Standard methodology of the All-Russian Research Program “Socio-cultural evolution of Russia and its regions”. It is shown that the capital remains the center of the country’s economic and business activity, which is confirmed by a higher proportion of employed people compared to the average in Russia and the Central Federal District. It is shown that the structure of employees by gender and age reflects national trends with certain specifics. The trends oftransformation of the sphere of employment by forms of ownership in recent decades have been revealed. Thus, the number of people employed in the private sector is growing in the metropolis, the share of the public sector remains significant, and the share of the foreign sector has been decreasing in recent years. It shows a significant stratification of Muscovites in terms of income, education, and professional status. A complex combination of market and non-market motives of the capital’s population has been identified, manifested in the desire for high income, readiness for significant time, physical costs and financial stability. Dissatisfaction with the work of some of the respondents was revealed. Self-assessment of financial situation and job satisfaction are directly related to this. Thus, the socio-professional structure of Moscow reflects both the general trends of post-industrial society and the specific features determined by the Russian socio-economic context. Understanding these processes is important for analyzing the sustainability of metropolitan society and developing measures to ensure social integration and balance the interests of different segments of the population.
