Abstract. Inthe context of the information saturation of the modern world, the formation of skills in working with text ceases to be an auxiliary task and becomes a central element of the professional training of all students, including students of geography. This is a complex, multicomponent process that requires deep methodological understanding and systematic work from the teacher throughout the entire period of study. The article discusses the theoretical and methodological aspects of the formation of geography students’ skills in working with educational, scientific and foreign texts. The relevance of the research is due to the increasing volume of professional information presented in text form and the need to develop students’ skills in semantic reading, analysis and interpretation of geographical data. The main problems of students working with texts are identified, and ways to solve them are proposed through a system of methodological techniques and exercises. The article identifies criteria for the effectiveness of working with the text, such as the quality of completed analytical tasks, the level of discussions at seminars, the literacy of using sources in written works, and the student’s ability to independently find and analyze a scientific publication on a given topic. Special attention is paid to the specifics of working with foreign scientific sources in the process of professional training of future geographers.

Keywords: geography, geographical education, working with text, semantic reading, scientific text, foreign sources, professional competence.
