Abstract. In the modern world, which is characterized by constant technological progress, rapid development of scientific knowledge and increasing complexity of professional tasks, responsibility for one’s own professional growth lies more directly on the specialist. Especially in such dynamic and new fields as cartography and geoinformatics, in which innovations arise at a high rate, and adaptation to new tools and the use of unknown methods requires constant work on oneself, flexibility and updating one’s knowledge. In these conditions, the presence and development of self-educational competence becomes the basis for high-quality professional training and continuous development of their skills. Self-educational competence includes the ability to independently search, analyze and critically evaluate information; self-organization: the ability to plan your studies, manage time, track your achievements, and evaluate yourself. All this allows specialists to maintain their relevance, respond quickly to changes and easily implement new technologies and methods in their practical work. That is, a student. An independent learner becomes a professional with qualities such as initiative, responsibility, independence, self-organization, determination, perseverance, and will. Self-educational competence is a quality that is characteristic of people who are psychologically and professionally mature. They understand how important personal initiative to learn is in the context of the development of the information world. One of the problems today is considered to be the imbalance between the incoming amount of information and the speed of its “consumption” or processing. In other words, the limited opportunities for assimilation of such a data stream within the walls of universities and other educational institutions require compensation for the independent work of students. Since, despite the above problems, specialists are required to quickly adapt to changing conditions and update their professional knowledge in a timely manner. Currently, a competent, proactive specialist who is characterized by self-improvement in professional, personal and social areas is in demand and competitive in the labor market.
