PROJECT-BASED ACTIVITIES FOR PROMOTING OF THE ANCIENT CITIES HERITAGE AS A TOOL FOR DEVELOPING MULTICULTURAL COMPETENCE OF COMMUNICATION STUDENTS

Abstract. The relevance of the study is determined by the present stage of intercultural interaction as an important factor of sustainable development. Intensification of information makes culture dialogue require effective solutions. The sociocultural potential of ancient cities, as savers of diverse cultural traditions, is not integrated into practice-oriented models of professional training yet. The purpose of the article is to determine the didactic potential and methodological effectiveness of project-based activities aimed at promoting the ancient cities heritage in forming of multicultural competence of future communication specialists. To achieve this purpose, it is needed to identify the educational potential of the ancient cities’ heritage; to prove the project-method effectiveness in development of multicultural competence among communication students; to show the professionally significant outcomes pf project activites. The research methodology includes a theoretical analysis of academic sources, participant observation, content analysis of student projects developed within a model of project-based activity. The activities of the “Sociocultural Workshop” are considered as an organization form of both educational and professional environment, modeling specific communicative situations within the framework of a cultural polylogue.  The implementation of the project forces the development of cross-cultural communication skills, readiness to perceive historical diversity, and the ability to use cultural heritage in communicative practices. These results demonstrate high educational potential of project-based learning on the basis of the ancient cities sociocultural environment. The model can be applied in the training of communication specialists. It is concluded that the ancient cities’ heritage serves as a significant factor in the formation of a sustainable world order based on the principles of cultural tolerance in present day globalized world.
