Abstract. The article discusses the problem of developing pupils’ foreign language speech competence and the ways to solve it by future teachers during their teaching practice at school. In order for a future teacher to choose the most effective teaching strategy, they need to take into account a number of factors. These include the level of academic preparation of the pupils, their age characteristics, the learning objectives at different stages of teaching, and the specific nature of the material being taught. By considering these factors, a future teacher can effectively select teaching methods and tools. Speaking skills are considered both as a means of using a foreign language in various communicative situations and as a result of learning. As a rule, pupils face difficulties when completing written tasks and do not know how to construct their speech correctly. It is especially difficult for pupils to master productive written speech at the secondary stage of learning foreign languages. The introduction of educational reference materials will significantly facilitate the perception of educational material, and will serve as a powerful motivation for individual work. The use of reference materials is a pedagogical technique that allows the future teacher to organize the lesson material in a compact and structured form. The object of the study is the process of developing speech skills and abilities in English lessons at the secondary school level. The subject of the study is the use of pedagogical and methodological techniques aimed at using reference materials to develop pupils’ grammatical skills and creative writing abilities. The purpose of the study is to develop a set of exercises based on the use of reference materials and test them during the educational process in secondary schools in Bryansk. The novelty of the study lies in the effective implementation of reference materials in the active cognitive activity of the pupils learning a foreign language. Pupils learn grammar, expand their vocabulary, and master techniques for generating ideas, which helps to develop emotional expressiveness and flexibility of thinking.
