Abstract. Adolescence is not just a period of active physical maturation, but also a period of personal development. During these years, the foundation of self-esteem is laid, which serves as an internal compass that guides individuals throughout their adult lives. The development of adequate self-esteem in adolescents is a crucial aspect of their psychological growth, influencing their socialization, academic achievements, and emotional well-being. The key components of adequate self-esteem include self-confidence, realism, stability, adaptability, and a focus on personal growth. In today’s rapidly changing world, where culture and technology are constantly evolving, the relationship between parents and teenagers plays a crucial role in shaping their healthy and positive self-esteem. Schools, on the other hand, have a dual role in teenagers’ lives, serving as both a place of development and a source of challenges. Under the influence of a variety of factors, from family and peer relationships to the digital environment, a teenager forms an idea of themselves: “Am I good enough?”, “What is valuable in me?”, “What is my place in the world?”. The search for answers to these questions is often accompanied by uncertainty, mood swings, and a need for approval. This article explores how self-esteem develops during a critical period, the risks that teenagers face, how self-esteem is formed in boys and girls, and how to develop an appropriate self-esteem during this challenging time. As a product of purposeful development, it can be adjusted throughout life, providing opportunities for continuous personal growth.
