Abstract. The world of great challenges and rapid changes, which surpass all previous rates, imposes special requirements on a person, his values, positions, qualities, and properties. The extent to which he can meet these requirements largely depends on his upbringing, education, and development, which are largely determined by the activities of teachers. Therefore, the relevance and significance of considering the personal and professional image of a modern teacher are undeniable. The problem of this study is to identify the most important characteristics of a modern teacher in accordance with the requirements of the profession, education, and social reality. To resolve this issue, a goal has been set to identify these characteristics and their justification, as well as the tools for their formation and development. The work was carried out in accordance with the methodology of pedagogy based on an integrative approach, combining the results of theoretical analysis of scientific concepts with data obtained using various methods and diagnostic techniques: analysis, synthesis, specification, study of literature and results of activities, questionnaires, and the method of expert assessments. The tests used were the E.F. Vanderlick (COT) test, the “Working Memory” test, the “Intellectual Lability” test, the method for studying the research potential of N.V. Bordovskaya and S.V. Kostromina, and others. The theoretical significance of the work lies in clarifying the most significant characteristics of a teacher’s personality, while the practical significance lies in the possibility of using the obtained image as a reference point for conducting career guidance work at schools, training future teachers, and professional and personal development of working teachers. The results have been compared with foreign studies, and their compliance with global educational trends has been noted. The study enriches the theory of general pedagogy. Its scientific novelty is associated with the identification of current and prospective personal and professional characteristics, the specification of the problem field, and the identification of ways to positively adjust the situation. The research’s predictive potential is related to the definition and development of educational technologies for the professional and personal development of teachers in the system of continuous pedagogical education.
