Abstract. Research activities of cadets in the context of modern geopolitical challenges and threats are considered as an important component of professional training of cadets of a military university. An analysis of the theory and practice of organizing and implementing research projects at military universities reveals a number of contradictions that indicate a discrepancy between cadets’ readiness for research in the real-world context of the existing pedagogical process and the relevance of cadets’ research competencies for military professional activities in the complex and uncertain conditions of military service, taking into account the experience of special military operations. The purpose of this article is to identify and provide a scientific justification for the problem of cadets’ professional preparation for research activities through mentoring and promising areas for organizing them at a military university. Research methods include theoretical (study and analysis of contemporary scientific and pedagogical literature, synthesis and generalization, modeling and forecasting, and design) and empirical (observation, generalization of cadets’ research products, etc.). A theoretical analysis of contemporary scholarly research on the issue under study, and the author’s conceptual position on the research, have highlighted the value of personality-oriented, activity-based, competency-based, axiological, and systemic methodological approaches to preparing cadets for research work at a university. The study’s findings have revealed the most common challenges in professional training in this regard; and clarified the military university’s potential for creating a favorable educational environment for developing the required readiness (through specially organized research work; integrating research methods into educational content; and developing all necessary resources (material and ideal) to support this process within the organization). The study’s novelty lies not only in refining the scientific problem of cadets’ professional training for research activities, but also in identifying promising areas for organizing research work at a military university, taking into account the author’s conceptual approaches and mentoring practices in its pedagogical support. For example, such as diagnostic and motivational activities aimed at identifying and developing the cadets’ readiness for it through the development of diagnostic tools,Innovative teaching technologies; a cognitive-content-based approach to integrating research methods of cognitive activity into the educational process and educational content based on interdisciplinarity; pedagogical support in research activities in the form of mentoring, updating the functional roles, missions, forms and methods of scientific consulting through mentoring; a reflexive-value analysis of the results of research activities, taking into account the criteria and positive attitudes towards it. The practical significance of the study lies in identifying typical problems in the organization of research work in universities, reflecting the insufficient readiness of teachers and the motivation of students for professional research activities at the university and the integration of research types of tasks and methods of work into the educational process; development of diagnostic tools for the process being studied (author’s matrix for assessing the structural sections of the “Introduction” of the final qualifying work; development of methodological recommendations for improving each promising area of organizing the process of research work of cadets in the form of mentoring.
