Abstract.  This article analyzes the current state of the Russian coal industry for the period 2021-2024, reveals the key role that coal mining plays in the Russian economy, which explains the high demand for such raw materials from the energy sector and other industries. The purpose of the study is to assess the dynamics of the main performance indicators of coal companies, as well as to identify current problems that hinder development and pose threats to the economic situation of the sub-sector. The analysis of the main absolute and relative indicators of the current state of the coal mining industry has been carried out and the trends of investment and innovative development of mining structures have been identified. The analysis uses official statistical data and information from open sources, including annual reports of coal enterprises. The results of the study show complex dynamics and the absence of a direct relationship between investments and increased production volumes, as well as the influence of external factors on profitability. The need to optimize the parameters of the development of the Russian coal industry, considering new challenges, is emphasized. It has been proven that the growth of Russian coal enterprises is negatively affected by a variety of circumstances: environmental problems, demographic shifts, political instability, technological challenges, climate change, etc. On the one hand, in the context of the digital transformation of the country’s economy, and the global transition to a carbon-free economy and the promotion of “green” and alternative energy sources, the prospects for the coal mining industry look rather gloomy. On the other hand, economic restrictions against Russia, which provoked an increase in gas prices after the shutdown of Nord Stream 2, can pave the way to a favorable scenario for coal miners (higher gas prices increase the attractiveness of coal as the most affordable fuel, stimulating demand). As a result of the conducted research, promising directions for the development of mining subcomplex structures have been proposed, the main problems have been identified and recommendations have been proposed to ensure the effective functioning of the coal mining sub-sector of the Russian economy.
