Abstract. This article explores the pedagogical potential of digital technologies in training students—future specialists in various fields—and argues that, in the context of today’s rapid transformations, developing students’ digital competencies is particularly important, as digital technologies permeate all areas of society: education, medicine, economics, politics, and other spheres. In the information society, digital technologies are becoming more than just a supplement to traditional approaches, methods, and teaching tools; they are becoming a key mechanism for graduate competitiveness. They enable students not only to master educational material but also to actively apply it in the virtual space, simulating various professional situations and making innovative decisions. Developing digital competencies in data analysis and critical thinking is particularly important. Students must be able to find, evaluate, and interpret information from various sources, as well as use specialized digital tools for processing and visualizing it. This enables them to form informed conclusions and make intelligent decisions in the context of big data analysis. In higher education, the development of this competency, as a significant component of professional competence, is particularly relevant, as it is directly linked to a specialist’s success in their future professional activities. This article discusses current challenges in training future IT specialists, raising issues related to the gap between academic preparation and the practical demands of the labor market, the inconsistency of educational programs at different levels of international standards, and the content of curricula, which is challenging due to an emphasis on self-study and insufficient attention to technical English used in programming and mathematical modeling of pedagogical processes.

Keywords: digital transformation of education, pedagogical potential of digital technologies, information society, digital competence.
