Abstract. This article explores the development of civic consciousness and patriotism in students at a modern university and the need to structure the educational process so that it stimulates active understanding and experience of real-life examples of service to the Fatherland, as well as the values of civic consciousness and patriotism, rather than the passive absorption of information. The authors consider physical education and sport as the primary means of social activity, the importance of which in fostering patriotism and developing civic identity has been discussed in the scientific works of many researchers. The purpose of this study is to identify the role of physical education and sport in developing civic consciousness and patriotism in students based on an analysis of scientific research on this issue, various information sources, questionnaire results, familiarization with regulatory documents, Russian Federation Government Orders, and Federal Laws. The object of this study is the civic and patriotic education of students at a modern university. The subject of the study is the targeted process of developing civic consciousness and patriotism in students at a modern university through physical education and sport. The authors of the article advance the thesis that the civic and patriotic education of students, as an ongoing process, requires educational institutions to create conditions in which patriotism is not perceived as a formal obligation or ideological slogan, but rather as a conscious choice based on a deep understanding of the history, culture, and contemporary challenges facing the country; and to foster in students a sense of pride in their country, its achievements, and its contribution to world civilization.
