Abstract. Readiness for independent scientific research is considered as an important component of the professional development of military university cadets. However, the scientific literature lacks a unified model of readiness formation and diagnostic tools that allow it to be evaluated. Accordingly, there is a limited number of empirical studies that focus on setting the level of readiness of cadets for research work. The purpose of the article is to scientifically substantiate the relevance of the problem of forming cadets’ readiness for research work and to search for effective mechanisms for assessing it. The Ryazan Higher Airborne Command School named after Army General V.F. Margelov is the experimental base of the study. The work uses theoretical methods of analysis and generalization of scientific and pedagogical sources, empirical methods of observation, questionnaires and others. The methodological basis of the research consists of systematic, activity-based and personality-oriented approaches, as well as modern scientific sources on the study of readiness for scientific activity at a military university. The results of the study can be used in improving the professional training of cadets at higher military educational institutions. For example, it is necessary to take into account the lack of reflexive and evaluative research skills among cadets with a sufficient level of cognitive knowledge in the field of research methodology (its categorical apparatus, logic, stages), as evidenced by the data from the survey of cadets in senior years (3-4 years). The scientific novelty consists in actualizing the scientific problem of forming cadets’ readiness for research work, taking into account the high need for military specialists who are able to make decisions competently and methodologically correctly in the face of an escalating geopolitical situation in the country and the world; identifying the levels of formation of the components of the readiness under study (cognitive, reflexive-evaluative, etc.); developing diagnostic tools (author’s tests and questionnaires) on the study of this problem in the real educational process of a military university. The practical significance of the study is to identify the typical difficulties of cadets in research activities: the difficulties of military students in independent self-organization during all stages of scientific research; the adequacy of self-reflection in evaluating the results of experimental work.; insufficient skills of independent work to eliminate mistakes, knowledge of the categorical apparatus and logic of research work, and others, which allows us to design effective mechanisms to overcome them, choose the specific content of education and the methodology of formed readiness.
