Abstract. Preparing future specialists for historical and local history activities in the modern higher education system requires a constant update of its organizational forms and methods to align with the state of modern science and achieve educational goals. This is driven by dynamic changes in public consciousness and educational standards, requiring graduates not only in-depth knowledge but also practical skills in field research. We propose that historical and local history activities of students be understood as socially significant activities of university students aimed at studying the history and culture of their native region. Today, this activity represents a two-tiered system based on two interacting components: the objective component and the process component. The process component includes methods, among which both traditional ones, proven effective during the Soviet period, and innovative ones, a result of recent decades, stand out. Traditional methods include archival research and fieldwork, while innovative ones include digital technologies and multimedia projects. This article explores the use of innovative and retro-innovative methods for organizing historical and local history activities of students in the higher education system. The author explains the current relevance of specific historical regional studies tools in various regions of the Russian Federation. This is particularly relevant for border areas and new constituent entities of the country, where a profound rethinking of local history is required. Using the example of the Luhansk People’s Republic, the author demonstrates the significant educational potential of historical and regional studies activities among students, contributing to the development of civic identity and patriotism.
