Abstract. The article discusses the issues of training cadets – future officers in universities of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, analyzes the main components of educational activities. The dependence of the level of formation of necessary competencies in the course of independent work, which is part of the educational activity of students when they master the basic educational program, on the level of independent striving to master the educational material, is determined. The essence of the cognitive activity of cadets of military educational institutions is presented, as well as the main research directions for increasing motivation to independently master the training program for both officers and students studying at civilian universities are considered. The relevance of the study is due to the specific isolation of military education, which affects the main criteria for the formation and development of cognitive activity of cadets, which is largely determined by strict regulations of the educational process, the combination of academic (official) activities and combat duty, as well as a high level of emotional and volitional stress. The analysis of the main components of cognitive activity is carried out, the levels of its development are highlighted. The study shows that cadets of military universities have more pronounced activity and personal-professional components due to the specific requirements of a military educational organization, while in civilian educational organizations motivation plays a significant role, focused on personal and professional development in more free conditions. The key component of cognitive activity is singled out separately, ensuring the successful development of the curriculum and the formation of competencies necessary for the performance of service and combat tasks by future officers. The development of cognitive activity of military university cadets requires the use of adapted isolated approaches, including active teaching methods and creative interaction, taking into account the peculiarities of the military environment of the educational organization.
