Abstract. The article highlights the problem of cadets’ research readiness to solve modern problems in military professional activities, taking into account modern geopolitical challenges, identifies the difficulties of cadets in mastering research competencies, and identifies the need for systematic and organized work by teachers and cadets in the form of mentoring as a prerequisite for effective pedagogical support in this work. The purpose of the article is to identify the features of pedagogical support in the form of mentoring cadets to prepare them for research work at a higher military educational institution. The paper uses theoretical methods of studying, analyzing, systematizing and generalizing scientific and pedagogical sources in the aspect under study. The paper uses methods of analysis and generalization of literary data. The methodological basis of the study is the study of the advantages of “horizontal” and “vertical” mentoring models in the scientific works of P.A. Ambarova, S.A. Butkevich, I.A. Petrozhitskaya, S.A. Piyavky, L.L. Pavlova and E.L. Filatova, E.G. Shakhovalov and others, which determine the importance of systemic, activity-based and personality-oriented approaches in teaching accompanying cadets to research work. The scientific novelty lies in the original description of the specifics of mentoring, features in socio-pedagogical and historical-pedagogical aspects, the identification of personal characteristics of mentors in the aspect of mentoring activities to form the research readiness of cadets in academic and future professional activities based on trust and mutual assistance of cadets and teachers. In particular, the following features of mentoring pedagogical support for teachers and cadets in the aspect under study are highlighted: reliance on humane, personality-oriented relationships with teachers based on positive moral and civic-patriotic values; orientation towards practice-oriented scientific research in a military university and the testing of their results in combat conditions; the long-term nature of mentoring pedagogical support in scientific activities students on the basis of systematic goal setting and planning; the inclusion of representatives of the military-industrial complex, participants in hostilities, representatives of potential employers in the research work of the university; military-professional self-determination and understanding of the tasks of the current stage of development of the geopolitical situation in the world, knowledge of the methodology of scientific research and others. The practical significance lies in the directions proposed by the authors for the further development of mentoring in the aspect of cadets’ research work (a variety of formats for interaction between mentors and mentees, the creation of a favorable educational environment, a systematic and long-term mentoring program, the integration of efforts of a military university and other partner organizations in this aspect, the creation of scientific communities, and others).
