Abstract. The paper analyzes the process of developing students’ research competencies through their systematic inclusion in project and research activities within the educational track aimed at training a physics teacher with an engineering type of thinking. The research approach is presented as a key methodological principle of modern education, ensuring the achievement of meta-subject results and the development of universal educational activities stipulated by the requirements of the Federal State Educational Standard. It is emphasized that it is the competence-based approach that serves as the methodological basis for developing the readiness of future teachers to solve professional problems in a rapidly changing educational environment. Particular attention is paid to pedagogical conditions that contribute to the development of students’ skills in independent search, critical analysis and interpretation of information, as well as the application of knowledge in new practice-oriented contexts. The most important factors are motivation, creation of a project environment, support for research initiatives and mentoring. It is shown that the combination of individual and group project activities ensures not only deepening of subject training, but also the formation of communicative, organizational-activity and reflexive skills necessary for successful professional socialization. Modern project-research technologies that integrate cognitive, activity and value-semantic components of education are analyzed. Their effectiveness in developing analytical and engineering thinking, the ability to formulate and solve problems, as well as in the formation of a research culture is noted. A conclusion is made about the need for systematic, targeted work on the formation of students’ research competencies. The role of a teacher as a tutor and mentor is shown, ensuring the achievement of competence and meta-subject results, which corresponds to modern educational standards and the tasks of training new generation teachers.
