Abstract. The article analyzes the accumulated data on the study of such a phenomenon as identity. It is considered in the context of solving different approaches, which indicates one of its key roles in all spheres of human life, including professional. The description of the characteristics of identity, its types, kinds, mechanisms of formation or controlled development presented in the article serves as the basis for developing a systematic approach to the targeted formation of professional identity of future specialists. Various points of view on the nature, character, manifestations, structure of identity are given. The mechanisms underlying its development are revealed. The work indicates the directions of studying human identity at the theoretical level. The changes occurring under the influence of the emerging identity are described. The purpose of the article is to establish certain conditions, the observance of which in the process of obtaining education by future specialists will allow creating a professionally identifying environment of the university, where “professional” means focus in preparing students for a specific professional activity. Of particular concern is the problem of professional marginalism, as well as the success of overcoming the crisis in the process of forming professional identity by students. The emphasis is placed on the fact that managing the process of developing the professional identity of future specialists plays a positive role in strengthening self-determined students and helps young people continue searching for a profession that will be consistent with their professional identity in a number of parameters. It is concluded that in the conditions of modern reality, which is determined by global technological changes, professional identity acts as a certain stable position of a future specialist, reducing the influence of changing reality and ensuring successful adaptation of professional skills to the chosen professional activity.
