Abstract. In modern Russia, popular songs have a significant educational impact on personality development, especially among the younger generation. The formation of a system of values and principles of this generation is extremely important for the further development of the country. Therefore, it is very important to keep track of the direction of ideas and meanings conveyed by songs. The purpose of this work is to explore popular songs in the socio-cultural space of Russia in connection with the events of recent years, such as the pandemic and the beginning of the Special military operation. Based on the content analysis, the general trends in the transformation of music formats and lyrics of songs from 2019 to 2023 are shown. According to the results of the study, the audience’s demand for positive emotions was revealed, which is manifested in the prevalence of comfortable sound frequencies, moderate tempo of melodies, and major key. The proportion of duet and group performances is growing, with a significant proportion of solo compositions, reflecting trends in soulfulness, penetration, on the one hand, and group cohesion, on the other. The share of entertainment and emotive functions in songs decreases with the growth of therapeutic and communicative functions. The share of the educational function is only 7%. A significant increase in Russian-language songs was revealed. But the educational potential of the native language can be used destructively. Thus, a significant trend in the use of obscene language has been recorded, with a third of the songs mentioning bad habits. In 2023, lifestyle issues are coming to the fore, which can contribute to cohesion and the formation of new social ties. But the proportion of songs about friendship is small, and about family is negligible. A decrease in the number of popular songs listened to in 2023 compared to 2019 was revealed, which, together with other results, may indicate an increase in the public need to change musical formats and the meanings of popular songs as educational tools in the context of global challenges facing Russia.

Keywords: music, popular music, song, popular song, socio-cultural space, values, meanings.
