Abstract. The article is devoted to the features and difficulties of developing ecotourism in Russia. Recently, the environmental burden on the planet has been rapidly increasing, which makes environmental conservation one of the priority areas of development for most developed countries. In these conditions, ecotourism is becoming increasingly popular. The Strategy for Tourism Development in Russia until 2035 highlights ecotourism as a priority sector that attracts a significant number of investors and receives active government support. Despite the fact that ecotourism is not a mass trend, it has the potential to become a key factor in the development of tourist and recreational areas in the future. Ecotourism development should be carried out taking into account the tourist and recreational capacity of the territory, with a limitation on the flow of tourists to prevent negative impacts on natural objects. Maintaining harmony between tourism development and environmental protection is a key principle of ecotourism. This is the task that executive authorities in the field of tourism and the administration of specially protected natural areas of Russia set for themselves when developing ecotourism in the territories under their jurisdiction. The article is devoted to the study of key approaches to defining ecotourism, as well as factors stimulating its development. It analyzes successful models of ecotourism, examines the legal acts governing its development in Russia, and on this basis identifies the features and problems of domestic ecotourism.
Keywords: ecological tourism, specially protected natural areas, national parks, features of ecological tourism, development of ecological tourism, tourist and recreational capacity of territories.
