Abstract. This article examines the linguistic and cultural aspect of teaching Russian as a foreign language, reflects the relationship between language and culture, and describes lexico-semantic work with foreign students in the educational process and in extracurricular activities. The authors proceed from the idea of combining classroom and extracurricular work on learning Russian as a foreign language into a single methodological complex of interrelated elements, which should significantly increase the effectiveness of the formation of students’ communication skills. The authors also detailed the principles of extracurricular work with international students. The authors also detailed the principles of extracurricular work with international students. According to the authors, extracurricular work with international students, built on an organic link with the educational process of learning Russian as a foreign language, should basically correspond to the principle of the interrelation of learning. The effectiveness of extracurricular work of a university with a foreign contingent of students directly depends on the implementation of the principle of students’ communicative activity in extracurricular work, their involvement in this work at all stages, from the conception of the idea and preparation of the event to its implementation and analysis. The principle of the unity of interdisciplinary relations is based on the involvement of foreign students in extracurricular activities of the complex of knowledge they have acquired in the framework of studying various disciplines, which is difficult and time-consuming. The authors conclude that the lexico-semantic work carried out with international students in the classroom and in extracurricular activities contributes to the development of their linguistic, socio-cultural and communicative competence.
